Halloween doesn't have to wait until October.

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 29, we're bringing the Fright Market back to Camp Lake Zurich at Phase Three Brewing for its second year, and we've made this one bigger, weirder and considerably darker.

Join the Streetz Artz Alliance from noon to 6 p.m. for more than four dozen local artists, makers, creators, comic dealers and specialty vendors taking over Phase Three Brewing in Lake Zurich. We'll have artists both inside the brewery and outside along the side drive aisle, giving everyone a little more room to explore while hopefully enjoying some beautiful late-summer weather.

Admission is completely free. No tickets are needed. There is plenty of onsite parking. P3 Kitchen will be open, the beer will be flowing and there will be a lot to discover.

This Isn't Your Typical Craft Show

When we put together a themed market, we really try to embrace the theme.

That doesn't mean putting a couple of pumpkins on tables and calling it a Halloween market.

Fright Market brings together artists working in horror, Halloween, gothic, spooky, strange, macabre and sometimes just wonderfully weird things. You'll find original paintings and illustrations, bone artwork, handmade jewelry, chainmaille, woodworking, crochet, crystals, intention candles, horror shirts, books, comics, vinyl, collectibles, laser-crafted pieces, tarot readings, gourmet treats, pickles and plenty of things that are a little harder to describe.

And that's exactly what we want.

One of the things we've always tried to do with Streetz Artz Alliance markets is make every show different. We have artists people recognize and specifically come back to see, but we also introduce new artists and businesses at every event.

Even if you attended Fright Market last year, this isn't the same market.

Some Familiar Faces Are Returning

We've brought back quite a few Streetz Artz Alliance favorites including Art of Alex Kujawa, Belonio Doodles, Dye The Day Away, Ghost Owl Studio, Jonathan Grimm Art, KP's Candy Factory, Masterclass Savory Sweet Foods, MasterLink Chainmaille, Snowingstars and Wanna Pickle Gourmet Foods.

But I'm particularly excited about some of the artists making their Fright Market debut.

Art by Andee Dandee creates bone artwork, jewelry and paintings. Andee scavenges, cleans and processes the bones herself, turning something that would otherwise be discarded into wearable jewelry, leather cuffs, rune necklaces and bracelets, witchy and Nordic-inspired décor and other unusual creations.

Gunderstorm Art brings the work of Craig Gunderson, who creates what he describes as tiny hauntings and quirky characters through pen, ink and ink wash. His work manages to live somewhere between whimsical and unsettling, which seems like a pretty good place to be for this market.

Ben's Dark Art specializes in horror and all things weird and spooky with original paintings, prints and hand-painted glow patches.

Blacky Cat Creations takes things in another direction with a combination of cute and creepy, including hand-knit kitty ear hats and creatures along with handmade fandom jewelry, pins, bookmarks and keychains.

Rogue Relics creates individually hand-engraved mirrors and glassware featuring gothic, American traditional and western-inspired artwork.

If you'd rather take your horror home in book form, local author Allen Rebot and Taco From Hell Publications will have paperback and hardcover novels available.

Then there's SPiLL, bringing graphic and whimsical creations including pillows and 3D-printed planters.

And that's only a small part of the lineup.

We're Bringing Comics, Magic and Tarot Too

Fright Market isn't limited to traditional handmade artwork.

Rocky from South Side Comic Book Show is joining us and specifically curating some of the comics he's bringing around horror, scary covers and darker themes.

I'll also be behind the Magic Deck Vortex table with Magic: The Gathering singles, preconstructed decks, dice and some of my handmade card storage and dividers. We've discovered through our Lake Zurich and Mundelein events that there are quite a few Magic players up this way, so I wasn't going to leave them out.

Yes, I realize Magic Deck Vortex isn't exactly a traditional handmade artist.

I know the guy running the market, so I made an exception.

Angelic Celestial Whispers will also return with tarot readings and intuitive guidance. Ren Simon offers spirit-led sessions and other intuitive services, adding another completely different experience to the market.

That's really what I love about putting an event like this together. You can walk from original horror artwork to comics, bone jewelry, chainmaille, woodworking, tarot, vinyl, books, pickles, giant treats, Magic cards and something you've probably never encountered at another market.

Grab Some Food. Have a Beer. Stay Awhile.

One of the advantages of having these events at breweries is that shopping doesn't have to be the entire afternoon.

Phase Three Brewing will have its craft beer available throughout the event, and P3 Kitchen will be open.

Their current menu includes options such as pretzel bites and P3-made chips along with handhelds including the Brisket Grilled Cheese, French Onion Dipper, Chopped Italian and Chicken Wrap. They also have a kids menu with grilled cheese, mac and cheese, ham and cheese and other options.

So come hungry.

Four Years of Working With Phase Three

Phase Three Brewing has become one of our longest-running brewery partners. We've brought the Be Mine Bazaar, Winterhaus Holiday Market, Midsummer Artisan Market and other events to Lake Zurich, and Brianne Adelman of FrankenWerks Studios and I have been working together on our Phase Three markets for four years.

Earlier this summer, we experimented with expanding our Midsummer Artisan Market outside along the brewery's side drive aisle.

It worked.

So we're doing it again tomorrow.

That gives us room for more artists while still keeping the market curated and trying to minimize unnecessary overlap between booths. We want you to be able to walk through the event and continually discover something different.

Supporting Small Businesses and More

At the end of the day, that's what these events are really about.

You're getting the opportunity to meet the people who actually create the artwork, write the books, make the jewelry, bake the treats, engrave the glass, build the woodworking and create all of the strange things you'll find throughout the market.

You're supporting independent artists and small businesses directly.

Several of our participating artists also support charitable organizations through their businesses and artwork, with causes represented at this event including The Trevor Project, Wanna Help, ICIRR, Delta Gamma, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Hello Happiness Creativity Center, American Cancer Society, American Liver Foundation, Fire Buddies, Pacific Garden Mission, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and others.

Come Get Your Fright On

Fright Market at Camp Lake Zurich takes place tomorrow, Saturday, August 29, from noon to 6 p.m.

Phase Three Brewing

932 Donata Ct.

Lake Zurich, IL 60047

Admission is free. No tickets are required. P3 Kitchen will be open, craft beer will be available and there is ample onsite parking.

We'll have more than four dozen artists, makers and specialty vendors spread throughout the brewery and outside.

Come for the horror art. Come for the comics. Come for the strange stuff. Come for a tarot reading. Come find a new Magic card. Come grab a beer and something to eat.

Or just come because you have absolutely no idea what you're going to find.

That's half the fun.

Halloween may still be a couple of months away, but we're not waiting until October.

Sharing is scaring, and attending is devilishly supportive.
